In the standings
Miami Marlins (21-30, 5th in NL East)
The Marlins took two of three in Anaheim over the weekend and have won six of their last 10 games, but they are already 12 games out in the division and eight games out of a wild-card spot. Miami’s minus-75 run differential is fourth-worst in baseball. They rank 16th in OPS (.704), 29th in rotation ERA (5.65) and 25th in bullpen ERA (4.91). The Marlins last made the playoffs in a traditional season in 2023 (84 wins) only to lose 100 games last year.
San Diego Padres (29-22, 3rd in NL West)
Taking two of three in Atlanta helped the Padres snap a season-worst six-game losing streak. The Padres are two games behind the Dodgers in the division and one game behind the Giants. The Padres took four of six last year from Miami and have not lost a season series against the Marlins since 2019.
Trending

Three relievers did not yield a run on the trip: RHP Jason Adam (2⅓ IP), LHP Yuki Matsui (2⅔ IP) and LHP Wandy Peralta (3 IP).
Pitching matchups
Monday
Marlins LHP Ryan Weathers (1-0, 1.80 ERA) | The former Padres, now 25 years old, hasn’t faced his former team since allowing five runs in 3 ⅓ innings in a loss in 2023, after he was traded in the deal that brought 1B Garrett Cooper and RHP Sean Reynolds into the organization. A forearm injury delayed Weathers’ 2025 debut until mid-May. He has allowed just two solo homers while striking out nine against one walk over 10 innings.
Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (3-4, 4.49 ERA) | He’s averaging 4.8 walks per nine innings on the season, but he’s walked just two against 14 strikeouts over his last 16 ⅔ innings (2.70 ERA). Vásquez hasn’t made a start in his career against the Marlins, but he beat them with two runs over 3 ⅔ innings in relief with the Yankees in 2023.
Tuesday
Marlins RHP Max Meyer (3-4, 4.15 ERA) | The third overall pick in 2020, the 26-year-old has a 5.05 ERA over 119 ⅓ innings since making his debut in 2025. Meyer has a 5.16 ERA in four road start this year, striking out 23 against 11 walks over 22⅔ innings. He has allowed 10 earned runs over his last two road starts (10⅓ IP). Meyer beat the Padres in his lone start against them, allowing four runs in 6⅓ innings last year.
Padres RHP Stephen Kolek (2-1, 2.84 ERA) | The converted Rule 5 reliever has allowed eight earned runs over his last two starts (11 IP) after opening the season with 14⅓ shutout innings. Kolek walked a season-high three batters in six innings his last time out. Kolek allowed three runs on three hits in 1⅓ innings in relief last year against the Marlins.
Wednesday
Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantara (2-7, 8.04 ERA) | The 2022 NL Cy Young winner has an MLB-worst 42 earned runs allowed since returning this season from Tommy John surgery. Lefties (.854 OPS) have been especially tough on Alcantara, who has been especially bad on the road so far this season (12.64 ERA). Alcantara has a 2.84 ERA in five career starts against the Padres but he had a 5.54 ERA in two starts against them in 2023—after he’d won the Cy Young the previous season.
Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (5-2 2.72 ERA) | He has 14 strikeouts and two earned runs over his last two starts (12 IP). Pivetta is 4-0 with a 1.44 ERA in five starts so far at Petco Park, while lefties have a .469 OPS so far this season compared to righties’ .683. Pivetta has a 4.62 ERA in 60⅓ career innings against the Marlins, including seven shutout innings in which he struck out 10 in a no-decision last year.
