EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – We’ve been enjoying a stretch of summer-like weather in Western Wisconsin as needed rain remains absent, but that will soon be changing as our next storm system moves across the Plains today. Low-level moisture, instability, and wind shear will all be increasing during the day as a warm front lifts into the region, setting the stage for an episode of severe weather this afternoon and into the early evening hours. The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the state in a level 3/5 Enhanced Risk for severe weather, meaning scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms are likely. This does not guarantee severe weather or storms in any given location within the risk area.
Given the increased severe threat, Today is a 13 First Alert Weather Day. You’ll want to be sure to stay weather aware and have ways to receive warning notifications. While there are a couple details that remain a bit uncertain this morning, recent forecast guidance has provided clarity on the timing of a cold front that will arrive from the west and provide the lift necessary for storms to develop.
Our window for severe weather in Western Wisconsin currently looks to be from 2-7pm. All hazards will be possible, including a higher chance for very large hail and damaging winds of 70 mph or greater. A couple strong tornadoes can also not be ruled out. Any storms that develop will also produce heavy rainfall.
